A former student at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies has being jailed for attending a men’s volleyball match in Tehran, the Iranian Capital.
Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, was protesting along with a group of women against the Iranian law that forbids women attending male sport events.
She was arrested and imprisoned in Evin Jail, released and then re-imprisoned when she returned to the jail to pick up her personal belongings.
Since being in incarcerated, it has been reported that Ms Ghavami has spent more than 40 days in solitary confinement.
A social media campaign #FreeGhonchehGhavami has been running this week and trending on Twitter.
According the SOAS Iranian Society’s Facebook page, she is facing a further two months in prison while she waits for her hearing.
They said: ‘Ghoncheh has been in prison for over two months, despite the fact that all investigations into her case have ended.
‘She is still in detention awaiting a hearing.’
